Travel Tips for Exploring the Yasawa Islands

Plan the perfect Fiji holiday with these frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the Yasawa Islands.

Where are the Yasawa Islands?

The Yasawa Islands are a group of around 20 volcanic islands just north-west of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu.  Known for its high grassy peaks, stunning beaches and clear blue waters, this region is the ultimate tropical paradise.

What do I need to know before visiting the Yasawa Islands?

  • With their close proximity to Nadi and Lautoka city, multiple transfer options and daily ferry transfers, the Yasawa Islands are some of the easiest to island-hop.  Read more about how to island-hop the Yasawa Islands.
  • Most resorts in this region require guests to buy a meal plan (daily breakfast, lunch and dinner) in addition to accommodation costs.
  • The only independent supermarket, restaurant and ATM in the region is located at Nanuya Island Resort in the northern part of the island chain.  These can easily be accessed by resorts near and around the Blue Lagoon area.  If you are staying further away, visit these at Port Denarau before you travel to the islands.
  • The region’s most unique activities - shark snorkelling & diving, manta snorkelling and the Sawa-i-Lau caves - are spread out across the islands.  If you want to have two or more of these experiences, divide your trip between resorts near each activity with the Awesome Adventures Bula Pass.  Alternatively, you can explore the Yasawa Islands on a small-ship cruise with Captain Cook Cruises or Blue Lagoon Cruises.
  • Manta season runs from May – September and centres around a shallow channel in the middle of the island chain.  If you want to snorkel with manta rays, stay as close as possible to cut out boat travel time to the snorkelling site.  The closest resorts to the Manta channel are Barefoot Manta Resort, Manta Ray Island Resort and Paradise Cove Resort.  Read more about snorkelling with manta rays in Fiji.
  • Don’t travel between islands in small fiberglass boats at night or during rough weather.

How do I get to the Yasawa Islands from Nadi?

The Yasawa Flyer ferry - operated by South Sea Cruises - is the most convenient way to travel to and island-hop between the Yasawa Islands. The daily ferry transfer from Port Denarau in Nadi to the top of the island chain takes 2-5 hours, dropping off guests at various resorts along the way. The ferry then returns along the same route to Port Denarau, making it easy to explore multiple islands.   This is also the most convenient way for guests to travel between resorts in the region.

Which is better – the Mamanuca Islands or Yasawa Islands?

It depends on your preference. The Mamanuca Islands are popular for day trips, with multiple resorts and more crowds. The Yasawa Islands are more rugged, ideal for travelers who love culture, outdoor adventures, and getting off the beaten track. However, you will also find plenty of romantic, family, and luxury resorts in the region.

What are the best resorts in the Yasawa Islands?

Depends on your travel style.  Whether you're seeking a luxurious adults-only retreat, family-friendly resort, budget-friendly backpacker lodge, or village homestay, there’s a resort for every type of traveller.

What are the top things to do in the Yasawa Islands?

Standout activities: Shark snorkelling & diving, snorkelling with manta rays, Sawa-i-Lau caves, sunset tubing and sea-kayaking itineraries.  These are generally centred around a particular location or section of the island chain.

Also known for:  Snorkelling, diving, recreational kayaking, beach hopping, hiking and village visits can be done at most Yasawa Island resorts.

Anytime!  Like everywhere else in Fiji, the weather in the Yasawa Islands is tropical with warm temperatures year-round.  The ‘winter’ season (May-October) features slightly cooler, drier weather, while the ‘summer’ season (November-April) brings more humidity and the occasional brief (and welcome) rain shower.

Are the Yasawa Islands safe for tourists?

With welcoming communities and a low crime rate, the Yasawa Islands are generally safe for tourists. However, it’s always a good idea to secure your valuables, take plenty of water on excursions, alert your resort to your exploration plans and be mindful of the weather.

What is the cost of traveling to the Yasawa Islands?

It varies depending on where you stay. The Yasawa Islands offer everything from affordable dormitory and budget stays to luxurious all-inclusive resorts. In general, your budget should cover room costs, meal plans, and ferry costs, plus extra for motorized activities or off-resort excursions.

Are there any cultural experiences in the Yasawa Islands?

Yes, cultural experiences are available at most resorts. These include visiting traditional Fijian villages or island schools, participating in kava ceremonies, enjoying traditional dance ‘meke’ nights, and learning about local crafts and customs.

What should I pack for a trip to the Yasawa Islands?

Pack lightweight clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, prescription medicines, insect repellent, snacks, reusable water and canvas shoes (for hiking) and snorkeling gear if you have it. Take a light jacket or sweater for cooler nights and a sarong (sulu) if you plan on visiting a village.  Don’t forget a good book and a camera to capture the stunning scenery.
