Fiji’s only dedicated hiking company, Talanoa Treks, has racked up some impressive sustainability creds for its work with rural Fijian communities.
What started out as a way to escape the city on the weekends quickly evolved into a passion project and successful small business that connected these remote highland villages with the outside world.
Scheduled hikes vary by length, difficulty and itinerary so it’s easy to find one that fits you.
On a 3-day cross-island hike you’ll span rolling grassland and picnic in cool river valleys before bunking in a highland village for the night. It’s world’s away from Fiji’s beaches but Nabutautau village's fascinating history and Navala village's uniqueness is worth the detour inland. Tack on a waterfall and peak challenge if you’re feeling up for the 5-day full monty!
The peak challenges scale some of Fiji’s highest mountains – including it’s highest – Mt Tomanivi (1,323m) - which looms over Viti Levu’s mountainous middle. The 3hr hike from Navai village at its foot to the summit passes through moisture-laden cloud forests dripping with ferns, orchids and the distinctive calls of native birds like the giant forest honeyeater, the barking pigeon, or the masked shining parrot.
There are a number of waterfalls in Fiji but you’ll want to visit Nabalasere village – it’s pretty spectacular, especially after a big rain.
While the scenery is captivating, the truly memorable experience is the chance to live the simple life and ‘Talanoa’ (share stories) with the local people. From your knowledgeable local guides who’ll point out traditional medicines along the well-worn paths to your village hosts who’ll welcome you with a hot meal and simple bedding at the end of a satisfying hike, it’s these little exchanges that make it an unforgettable adventure.
Hikes include transportation at the start and finish, basic accommodation, most meals, a dedicated trip leader and local guides plus all entry fees and cultural requirements to the villages that are visited along the way.
Opt for the day trips if you’re not up for a marathon. Or if you’re travelling with a few friends, why not organise a tailored trek? Book your hike now!
